Things I Learned in Truro: 2011

1. Even though bacon, caramel, and ice cream are my favorites, combining all three does not make the ultimate frozen treat. Last year, I had several servings of the Bacon Maple at Sweet Escapes, and I was looking forward to having some again, but since they're so fond of experimenting with flavors over there, this summer it was Bacon Caramel. Which should be a flavor that I would swoon over, and then taste, and then celebrate by melting into a happy puddle on the floor. But it was mostly just okay. And instead, I often ordered vanilla with caramel sauce and walnuts, which, by the way, is what I've been having at home since we got back a few weeks ago. Except I toast the walnuts, and when I made the caramel sauce, I added salt. And it is delicious.

2. According to Rudy, the ocean is "spicy." She hung over Todd's shoulder when he carried her into the waves, she scooped up the water in her little Tooty hands, and she lapped at it like a cat. And then she drawled, several times, in her slow Rudy way, that the ocean...is...spicy.

3. Boogie boarding is always, always great. Whether the waves are gentle sloshes at low tide or scary, frothing crashes that knock you down and drag you at least twenty feet down the shore each time, playing in the water, especially after age thirty, makes you happy.
